About Hamilton Road Dental Practice

Hamilton Road Dental Practice has been providing dental care to the Motherwell community for over 50 years.

Many of our patients have grown and evolved with the practice having attended initially as young children, and now with families of their own.

The Practice History
Gordon Munro acquired the current premises in July 1971 and established Munro Dental Surgery which developed into one of the largest and best regarded dental practices in Motherwell. The success of the practice is a testament to the dedication and work put in by Gordon and his wife Eleanor. Together they managed to create a practice that prided itself on providing good quality dentistry to their patients, and particularly embracing the ethos of care for all the family.

This was possible with the help of a dedicated staff, many of whom worked at the practice for many years. Tom Colquhoun worked alongside Gordon for 25 years and retired in 2007. Aileen Ross worked at the practice for over 30 years and actively trained many of the dentists who have worked at the practice; she retired at the end of 2017. Alison Samuel was the Practice Manager for the Munros and remained in place until 2016. Vikki Harvey has succeeded Alison as Practice manager after 15 years in the practice as an experienced member of the team. This continuity of care, built up over many years, has been invaluable.

A New Beginning
In April 2008, John McKenna and Shane McElhinney took over the practice. Having worked there prior to taking over, it gave us an insight into what changes could be made to improve the practice.

Dentistry is evolving all the time, with more treatment choices than ever available. With the current trend towards both cosmetic dentistry and minimally-invasive dentistry, we recognised that to be able to keep up to date, it was important that the practice had to evolve with the profession.

Staff Training
Staff training is vital in delivering the best treatment possible, and at Hamilton Road Dental Practice, all our staff including the Dentists, Nurses, Reception team and Technician attend courses regularly and all forms of Continued Professional Development are encouraged.

Practice Values
For any treatment to be successful, the foundations of regular check-ups and maintained oral health are vital, and this is where our core values of providing dental care to all the family are relevant. We recognise the importance of maintaining and promoting dental heath from a very early age and believe in the ethos of ‘prevention is better than the cure.’ Our staff are trained in oral health promotion and the practice has offered the NHS Childsmile programme since it’s inception.

Practice Improvements
To be able to provide our patients with the best possible standard of care, we have aimed to update and where possible improve every aspect of the practice. As the premises are large there are signs present to point you in the right direction. We use a computerised admin system so that any queries you may have should be managed quickly and efficiently by our reception staff.

Each of our five surgeries are fully modernised with state of the art equipment including a computerised clinical system with digital xrays. We have also made sure that our 3 downstairs surgeries are as wheelchair friendly as the original design of the property allows.

We look forward to welcoming all patients, new and long standing, to the practice.
